Iveragh Peninsula Tour

With outstanding views out to the Skellig Islands from its rugged Atlantic coastline, the Iveragh Peninsula has a number of mountain passes, valleys, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, beaches and a collection of photogenic constructions and artefacts, including lighthouses, abbeys, churches, castles, forts, standing stones, rock art and atmospheric abandoned structures. The eastern edge of the Iveragh Peninsula has the highest mountain range in Ireland and contains some of the best rural Irish scenery as well as the lakes and woodland landscapes that comprise the Killarney National Park. The south west tip of the peninsula is home to The Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve and a great location for astro and night photography.

Iveragh is the largest Peninsula in South West Ireland, stretching from Killorglin, Killarney and Kenmare in the east all the way to the Atlantic shoreline over 30 miles away to the west, and is famous for the “Ring of Kerry”, which is a 111 mile circuit of the peninsula. Although an absolutely fabulous road trip with some stunning locations and vistas, I personally don’t find it makes for a great day out with the camera. Indeed, because of its size and the charm and character of its varying terrain, some guidebooks recommend a visit of at least two or three days on the Iveragh Peninsula and I’m in complete agreement with them.

Over the years I’ve discovered so many other interesting places and superb locations, not far away from the main road that forms the Ring of Kerry. Following these narrow roads and tracks that wind their way about the peninsula during this tour, we can spend our time discovering and exploring a multitude of fantastic locations and sublime views of the rugged coastline, often not seen by the majority of tourists on the Ring of Kerry. To really get deep into the visual and cultural riches the Iveragh Peninsula has to offer, consider booking two days on this tour and a day on our Killarney and the Reeks tour.
