Sunset over the Sleeping Giant

The Sleeping Giant, also known as An Fear Marbh, The Dead Man, or Inis Tuaisceart is the most northerly of the Blasket Islands, located just over 4 miles west of Dunquin, at the western edge of the Dingle Peninsula in Co. Kerry, Ireland.

From the irish language, Inis Tuaisceart translates to “Northern Isle” while the names of “The Sleeping Giant”, “An Fear Marbh” and “The Dead Man” become apparent when this island is viewed from an easterly direction, exhibiting the profile of a rugged faced giant, lying on their back.

Although the island is not easily accessible from the sea, there are the remains of settlements and dwellings, as well as the ruin of an oratory, similar to those at Gallarus, St. Manchan's Oratory and also St Brendan’s Oratory, just a few miles away on the Dingle Peninsula.

This was captured from Dunquin Pier on a September evening during 2017, as the sun was setting behind the giant, using a telephoto lens.
