Waterfall on the Conor Pass at Sunset

This waterfall is found along the Conor Pass road, which is the highest road in Ireland at around 1500ft or 500M. The Conor Pass links the ancient trading and fishing town of Dingle to the northern side of the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland.

From the car park at the top of the pass there are views of the town of Dingle and across Dingle Bay and as far south as the Skellig Islands. Looking north on a clear day, it’s possible to see as far as County Clare. Below the car park on the northern side, the road narrows into a twisting single lane road cut into the side of the mountain. From here there are dramatic views into the valley below and across to the rugged side of the Brandon Mountain range, sculptured by the glaciers 10,000 years ago. As the end of this narrow section of single lane road is the car park beside this waterfall, fed from the Peddlers Lake above.

When I captured this photograph during early May 2017, it had rained heavily throughout the day. However, towards evening there was a glimmer of light and clearance in the sky to the west, so I decided to take my chances and drive up the Conor Pass from Dingle to the waterfall, which would be in full flow following the deluge of rain. I did question my judgement and sanity as I put my headlights on and drove up into the low cloud and mist blanketing the top of the pass! I was rewarded as the rain and mist vanished and the sky gradually brightened, creating this wonderful, colourful sunset to end the day.
