Programme

Wednesday 16th October 2019

We meet in Killarney at the Lake Hotel, beginning at 3.00 p.m.  Don’t worry if you’re arriving later as we’ll never be that far away, and we’ll swing by to collect you when you’re ready to join up with the tour.  Highlights include Torc Waterfall and the Lakes of Killarney, finishing up with a sunset and dusk shoot at Ross Castle on the shores of Lough Leane.  During our 3 day stay in Killarney we’ll travel through the Gap of Dunloe and weather permitting, there’s also an opportunity for a night time photography session within the gap.

High quality accommodation with a touch of luxury at our bases in Kilarney, Caherciveen and Dingle:

The Lake Hotel, Killarney for 3 nights

The Ring of Kerry Hotel, Caherciveen for 2 nights

Greenmount House, Dingle for 2 nights

Thursday 17th October 2019

Heading south, we explore the Beara Peninsula, split between the counties of Kerry and Cork, this peninsula is a real hidden gem, inaccessible for the most part by the larger tour buses, and packed with fabulous photographic opportunities around almost every turn. Highlights today include some magnificent vistas, stone circles, mountain passes, glacial lakes and valleys, abandoned structures, as well as a fascinating coastline to discover. We also visit the busy fishing town of Castletownbere and take in the colourful village of Allihies while investigating some of the engine houses dotted around the landscape, remnants from the copper mining in the area over the millennia.

All the locations we visit are easy to access with, at the very most, a few minutes’ walk up or down a gentle slope, although the ability to climb stiles and traverse steeper slopes does on occasion provide some extra vantage points.

Friday 18th October 2019

We take yet another stunning mountain pass as we cross into West Cork again, visiting the Gougane Barra, where the picturesque Church and Oratory of St Finbarr’s are situated on a small island in the Gougane Lake. As we wind our way through the mountains and valleys other points of interest today are stone circles as well as a visit to the colourful rural town of Kilgarvan. We’ll also get to have a look around the historical town of Kenmare and finish the day with an evening tour beside the Lakes of Killarney.

Optional sunrise expeditions every morning at locations close to our hotel as well as sunset & dusk shoots at carefully chosen locations every evening.

Saturday 19th October  2019

As well as visiting the spectacular landscape within the Black Valley, including a visit to the iconic ruins of “Molly’s Cottage”, this morning also provides a splendid opportunity to walk through the Gap of Dunloe, if you so wish. Later in the day we’ll head out around the Iveragh Peninsula (or The Ring of Kerry) exploring the outstanding scenery around Derrynane, Caherdaniel and Waterville, with a wild compilation of ancient ruins, coastal and rural landscapes. As we’re located in the Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve for 2 nights there’s also the option of some more night time photography sessions.

There are many small towns and villages en route for drinks, snacks and facilities throughout the day and we’ll take a break in a town that offers a wide range of options for dinner every day.

Sunday 20th October 2019

A more relaxing day today as we remain around the very western tip of the Iveragh Peninsula and Valentia Island. Highlights include Cromwell’s Lighthouse, Ballycarberry Castle, the Kerry Cliffs, St. Finians Bay and we take in superb views out to the Skellig Islands as we investigate the rugged coastline. Along the way we’ll be stopping off at countless abandoned farmhouses and ruins, hidden coves and piers and we pay a visit to the fishing village of Portmagee, the main departure point for the Skellig Islands.

There will always be a touch of flexibility within the programme as the Atlantic weather systems sometimes dictate that we stay indoors for a bit and work on post processing and looking at and critiquing our images!

Monday 21st October 2019

We complete our visit to the Iveragh Peninsula roaming through the heart of the peninsula taking mountain passes with panoramic views and following narrow back roads into stunning glaciated valleys, as we head towards our first stop on the Dingle Peninsula at Inch Strand. The day finishes with an evening tour around Slea Head, visiting some of my own favourite spots along the coastline, including Slea Head, Coumeenoole, Dunquin Pier and Clogher Strand.

As with all the photography tours I facilitate, my own camera equipment stays at home, (I take my photography during my own time and not during yours!). I’ll always be on hand to assist you as needed with any composition advice, tuition and demonstrations that you require, as we concentrate on your photography.

Tuesday 22nd October 2019

I’ve been exploring the Dingle Peninsula my entire life and photographing it for the last 30 years.  Even if you’ve visited Dingle before, I’ll guarantee that you’ll get to cover some new ground and discover new sights and landscapes as we tour the peninsula. On the agenda around Dingle today are a collection of ruins, including small castles, ancient ecclesiastical sites and standing stones within the rural countryside. The Dingle Peninsula also has many beaches as well as easy access to some of the finest coastal scenery in Ireland and we’ll get to encounter and photograph at some incredible locations.

At the end of each day, If you’re still full of energy and want to experience some of that famous Irish music and hospitality, we’re always close to all the action at our bases in Killarney, Caherciveeen and Dingle!

Wednesday 23rd October 2019

Final day of the tour ☹ We’ll continue to explore the Dingle Peninsula with a trip over the Conor Pass to take in the views from the highest road in Ireland as well as exploring a few more hidden delights along the northern edge of the peninsula. We’ll experience even more inspiring coastline at Kinard and visit Minard Strand with the castle looming over the scenic beach. We finish up with a farewell visit to Inch Strand, arriving back in Killarney for 4.00 p.m.
